Anyone grow mealworms for the birds?

I decided to start my own mealworm colony to use to feed my wild birds, since the insect population is threatened by loss of habitat and use of pesticides. Each morning I pour a pile of live mealworms onto a platform feeder. Today I enjoyed watching the war ensue. I have Black Capped Chickadees, nuthatches, robins, woodpeckers, cardinals, and even a turkey taking turns at/under the feeder. The male cardinals were chasing each other away, but didn't seem to care about all the other birds taking their share. I'm hoping the supply of mealworms will benefit the hatchlings hiding away in nearby nests. The adults can boost their nutrition with the seeds in my feeders, but the babies need something easier to swallow. Has anyone else used mealworms, and have you attracted any more diversity. I believe mealworms are a favorite of bluebirds. I haven't been able to watch for long, so I may be missing some visitors.

Hope everyone is having a great wildlife season.

Martha
