I was walking in a local nature preserve with my SO, and he saw a large (4-5') dark snake, almost a black color. He called me over to look at it, and as I got closer, it shook it's tail like a rattlesnake would. It didn't make a rattling noise, it just made a "swishing" sound. This was in area that has woods, and open fields, not far from a river, in SE MA. Does anyone know what snake would do that?

Many snakes 'rattle' their tail as a threat.

Just look thorugh pictures of your native snakes until you find a matching one.

Long and skinny and dark = black racer?
