I'm being chased out of my garden

by rufous hummingbirds . Those aggressive miniatures start buzzing angrily and dive-bomb me as soon as I step out the door. This morning I had half a dozen of them circling me like wasps as I refilled their feeders. They came so close, I could feel the wind generated by their tiny wings.

The Steller's jays have decided to screech their alarm call every time I refill the peanut feeder. If I ever dare eat one of "their" peanuts the noise swells to a crescendo.

Other animals are much more cool.

The raccoons look at me like: "Hey this is our our garden. Do you know that you're trespassing?"

The skunks sniff the air, as if to say: "Ugh! A human. Time to leave."

The possums give me a toothy smile: "Just passing through. Just passing through. No harm done.'

My neighbors' cats scoot out of harm's way: "We're outta here."

The deer look over the fence, giving me wistful glances with their big brown eyes, "We'd love to come in, but that fence is in the way," before they amble off to eat my neighbors; unfenced roses.

Oh, yes, the hawks. They look down at me from their lofty perches: "Do you mind scaring up a bird for us?" And they snatch them if I accidentally do.

How do "your" animals react to you?
