feasibility of 'creating' a snag

Dh and I have finally agreed to get rid of the Norwegian Maple growing in our backyard. He teased me incessantly about the evils of removing a tree until I found out that it's invasive in our region. Our first plan was to simply chop it down, but since we are attempting to make our small backyard a mini wildlife habitat, I suggested maybe lopping off most of the branches and leaving the rest as a snag. Is this at all feasible? There are some downy woodpeckers who regularly nest in a nearby snag, in a neighbor's yard, so I think we might attract our own family, which would be delightful. I'm just not sure how to go about this or if it could even work. Any ideas?

Note: My neighborhood has plenty of mature trees, including some very tall evergreens and a huge holly just next door, so the loss of cover shouldn't have much of an effect, and we are planning to put in a serviceberry just about 12 ft. from where the maple is now.
