Wildlife Garden

[REQUEST] Help determining what kind of rock I'm looking at.

I am four months into the cultivation of a wildlife garden in Hartford, Connecticut. I found a small (estimated 5 inch in diameter) stone that appears to have pushed up through my garden's flower and is surrounded by red dirt. Has anyone else seen similar occurrences in their gardens? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Stones commonly rise out of the soil in spring following the cycle of winter freezing and thawing of the ground. Farmers complain bitterly that they grow more rocks in their fields than crops. If you have been having the kind of rains we've had this spring, it is probably just the ground "heaving" and the rock rising to the surface due to the pressure caused by moisture and temperature shifts.
