This vaguely looks like a Black-headed grosbeak to me, but I am no expert (just looked at the Peterson field guide). This is a Western (North Am.) bird that occasionaly wanders East, esp. during winter.

Roseunhip I think you are correct in your identification! I have been looking on the search engines for the Black-headed Grosbeak and from what I can tell and read.......it sounds just like it! Thanks a lot for your help. We first saw it Monday morning, for several hours it hung around the yard and feeders eating sunflower seeds and then I saw it again this evening. What a treat!!!

Thanks Pinkie! I thought I was lucky too. We actually had another identical bird show up with the first one. They hung around for about a week after that and then I guess off to better nesting grounds!
