Where are the Other Rabbits?

Kluttery

Last summer, after being away from my childhood home for nearly 30 years, I moved back in to rehab the place. The backyard is about two acres and heavily overgrown. I often see cottontails near the edge, in my neighbor's open backyard and occasionally in my front yard.

This evening I saw a baby bunny right outside my backdoor. It was no longer, yet slightly fatter, than an adult chipmunk. Man, what a cute little thing!

But he was all alone.

Knowing how rabbits are supposed to be such prolific breeders, this surprised me. Surely there were others in the litter.

As far as I know, most newborn animals will go out exploring with their siblings until they feel comfortable breaking off on their own.

That he was so small and by himself puzzles me.
