Bird ID Help

Posted by jasonkay z5 IL (My Page) on

I've tried and failed to figure this out online. The other day a bird came to drink at my birdbath. It was mostly brown, but had three distinctive white stripes on its head and one on each wing. It also had a beak that was suggestive of some kind of hawk. It was about the size of a robin. I thought maybe it was some kind of juvenile hawk?

I'm very bad at bird ID, and would appreciate any help.

My guess is female red-breasted grosbeak.

Here is a link that might be useful: female red breasted grosbeak
