? nesting birds

I've been watching a pigeon who built a nest very near the entrance to the apt building where I live.
I always keep my cat indoors during nesting season, so I'm trying to determine if she has emptied her nest.
She's been sitting on it for over 24 hours, every time I look - she's there.
Wonder if this is unusual, I don't know if there really are any baby birds in the nest.
Curious to me why they would build a nest in a yard where there is a cat too.
Anybody know anything about this behavior?
thanks,

If the bird is sitting on the nest non-stop, she is incubating eggs. After the egg's hatch, you will see her going back and forth from the nest, to bring food to feed the chicks. American birds did not evolve with domestic cats, so they didn't develop instincts to protect themselves from cats. One of many reasons why cats should not be left outdoors unsupervised.

So many reasons to keep cats inside all their lives! After I had one die of a head abcess from fighting, one torn up in my car's fan belt, one run over by a school bus in front of little kids (really), two die young of contageous feline diseases, some just disappeared forever, I got very belatedly smart - no more cats outside. House cats can be very content...and safe. Min

To say nothing about fleas, ticks, intestinal worms, heart worms, and other parasites! We've recently adopted a young stray cat, and he isn't remotely interested in dashing back to the outside! If you hold the door open for him, he just sits down and stares at you. What an easy transition.
