Hidden Herbivores?

I have long since become accustomed to the idea that insect-eaten leaves are a sign of a healthy garden, but I'm curious: what's eating the leaves? Whenever I inspect the leaves with holes in them or corners chewed off (above and below), I see no hungry insects or other critters - to my disappointment. If I set up an all-you-can-eat buffet in my backyard, the least the diners could do is show themselves to me!

Have you gone out at night? Many insects are night feeders.

Right on the money! I went out with a flashlight and discovered little reddish-brown beetles on the undersides of my witch hazel's leaves. I'm pretty sure they're junebugs, Phyllophaga sp. ("leaf eater" - how fitting).
