I'd say go with berrying bushes. Chokeberry, winterberry, viburnums of all types, elderberries, and serviceberries to name just a few.

Definatly put in a pond with waterfalls, the critters LOVE it, and you will have birds galore!

It sounds like you have a pretty large lot for southern California? How exciting that you've decided to create a wildlife garden!

You could check out the Backyard Habitat program run by the National Wildlife Federation for suggestions. They also have a database with pictures of some of the certified habitats.

I would plant a variety of smaller trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses. Think about using your garden space vertically as well as horizontally, although I would be careful about the placement of trees because they will eventually grow large and shade the surrounding area.

Try to plant as many native plants as possible. These are adapted to your region and the native wildlife is adapted to them. They require less maintenance and will use less water. If you do plant any non-natives, be sure they are NOT invasive and are compatible with your local climate.

Go organic. Pesticides are a huge problem especially for the pollinators. Your garden can be refuge where the wildlife is not going to be poisoned.

A pond is also an excellent idea!

Although I am no big fan of grass, you might still want a patch of it somewhere for your growing boys to play on.
