Gardening with deer, rabbits, drought...

Okay, so I've got a lot of challenges but I feel like I'm winning with the deer, rabbits and our very long drought last year!

Of course, deer herds in different areas eat different things. All I did was plant 'deer resistant' plants and then tracked the damage.

My garden is a certified NWF Habitat and a certified Monarch Butterfly Waystation. We have a lot of hummingbirds, too.

I update my blog regularly. Today, I posted a lot of information and photos of getting a colorful flower garden with deer in residence.

Hope this is helpful.

I haven't seen Crepe myrtle since I left NC! Your garden is absolutely gorgeous.

The crape myrtles are gorgeous this year. We had a long drought last year, but a lot of rain this year. The blooms are so heavy! And...deer don't eat crape myrtle. I've had a problem with Japanese Beetles eating the small 'White Chocolate' crape myrtle that is that burgundy-leaved shrub in front of the echinops (globe thistle). It will bloom white.

wonbyherwits-

I checked out your blog and your gardens are gorgeous!! Beautiful photographs and interesting information about deer resistant gardening. Loved your photos of a butterfly and a hummingbird enjoying your flowering plants.

This year the deer in our woods have decided that the rows of broccoli in my vegetable garden are a tasty salad bar. And then for the main course they ate all my cantelope vines. Brats. At least they aren't eating my hostas yet. I tried the real "Deer Fence" spray product but the deer in my area think it tastes like steak sauce for plants. Doesn't deter them one bit even if I spray it on daily. Next year....a deer proof fence around my garden.

Thanks for sharing your blog and photos.

Becky,
I know how frustrating it can be with deer helping themselves to the garden. Fortunately, my garden is in full sun so that there are plenty of deer resistant choices. I miss my hostas, daylilies, hydgrangeas and azaleas from a previous house where I didn't have a deer problem. I just can't grow those in an unprotected area here.
I'm glad the blog is interesting for you. My husband and I really enjoy our garden and the visiting wildlife.
