What is eating the pinecones?

We must have something new to our yard because recently we are noticing pinecones stripped down to the core. They look a little like corn cobs. I have no idea what is eating them. I usually find a pile of them under a tree. Any ideas?

Squirrels eat them down to the core.

Really?? I must have a new squirrel to the area as I've never seen this before, or at least not piles of them. Maybe I've got one monster-sized squirrel. At least I can be glad it's eating the pinecones and not my garden.

Fox squirrels are the ones that chew up the cones to get to the seed in our area.They really like long leaf pine cones. Red
