Very, very cool! We have threatened box turtles here, but nothing endangered that I know of in the area. Take good care of that tortoise!

I planted a butterfly garden shortly after moving to Jacksonville. I built the bed up with compost and sand. It attracts a lot of butterflies but recently it's sandy, relatively high soil has attracted a young male gopher tortoise. A few of my garden plants are endangered in their native lands and wood storks fly overhead occasionally but this is the only endangered native species to make a home in my yard.

I've planted lantanas in my yard, once they get through one summer they thrive here in FL. They attract countless butterflies to my yard and they do well in our sandy soil and dry peroids. Just keep them moist the first year and enjoy the show. They do leave a slight smell on hands if you touch leaves without gloves. I hope you enjoy your new friend. I love my turtle.
