Tree frog living in planter on my deck

| The frog is a little green one and we have become attached to it. The problem is the winter time. It is in a spider plant that I have always over wintered in my potting shed.
My questions are regarding the livablility of the frog staying in the plant thru the winter. Do all frogs hibernate so that food and water are a moot point? What is the probability of it surviving till spring? Any suggestions would be appreciated by both of us.
Thanks for you input, Bonnie |

| Bonnie, The only native tree frog in Oregon is the Pacific Tree Frog, Hyla regilla. They can be either green or brown in color. This species does not truly hibernate, but may find a sheltered spot during cold snaps. It actually breeds in the late winter to early spring when temperatures would seem to be too cold for amphibians. (obviously if their ponds are iced-over they will move out of the water and wait until temps are back into the low 40's before resuming their activities) We have the same species here in the Sacramento area; you can hear them begin calling in January and are usually through with breeding by the time April arrives... Bonnie, I have tree frogs too. They live in my hanging baskets and when I have had cold snaps, I have found them in a tupperware bowl I had forgotten that was half full of water. I did not realize it at the time, but they were keeping warm in the water. I have one of those tall rubbermaid 'sheds' that you would keep shovels and rakes in and always find them sleeping in there. so if your shed has the smallest opening for them, maybe they can keep warm in there. Have you seen those topsy turvy tomatoe hanging "plastic bags"? Last year, I had 2 families living in them. It was the greatest sight to see them 1 by 1 pop their little heads out looking for bugs at the porch light. Michelle |

I have tree frogs all over the place here near Seattle. With 12 ponds, the sound is almost overwhelming in the Spring. Here's one hiding in some Hen and Chicks, called 'Aracnoideum, planted in an old Hibachi on the deck.

| Botann - I love that photo! It took me a bit to find the frog. |
