brush piles

For years we've had extensive brush piles along one side of our yard, made out of last year's prairie garden rakings, plus anything we cut off our vines and shrubs. I've never been aware of much animal activity in them before, but now I think they're inhabited. I haven't seen any residents, but I have two clues: lots of discarded acorn caps and half-eaten nuts all around the piles, and intense interest on the part of our dog. She wants to stick her nose into them and dig them up (we don't let her). It's most likely chipmunks. We cleared out some invasive vines that provided cover for them earlier in the season, so now I think they've moved into the brush piles.
