Squirrels are stealing my river rock

Over the past two weeks I have observed the squirrels which typical congregate around my bird feeder have been begun to pilfer river rock from the edge of the patio. They seem to be taking about 5 - 10 pieces per day and all are around 1 to 3 " in diameter.

All I can assume is that they are mistaking these for nuts.

Any ideas what's up?

Yes I too have squirrels stealing my river rocks and I'm sure they know there are not NUTS...They are certainly doing something out of the ordinary. Its been going now for a week or so and in my area they are Black squirrels....I tried to follow them where they are taking the rocks but unable to .Maybe with a pellet gun to scare them off but not killing them or injuring them. WHAT IS THE SOLUTION ?
