When do garter snakes mate?

On our walk this evening, there were 2 dead garter snakes in the road and it looked as if they had been entwined when they were hit.

I certainly hope this was an accident but too often I've seen drivers deliberately run over snakes.

Most commonly and normally in the spring, but I've seen them do it in the fall as well. My guess is they were, in fact, mating. It's a shame they were hit.
