What is leaving this scat?

A friend and I walk around our subdivision and twice we have seen this sort poo left on the road. It contains some type of shells. This week I found a pile on my front lawn near the door! The animal is obviously going all around the neighborhood and I would like to know what it is. I suspect something nocturnal.
I can place something for size near the pile.

| That's a good idea, rhizo. It could well be that. Perhaps a neighbor has composted pumpkin or squash with the seeds. |
