Deter raccoons but not squirrels?

I just discovered that I have a band of 5 raccoons raiding my bird feeder. I bought a squirrel-proof bird feeder tonight so the birds can at least have something the raccoons won't empty every night, but I'm not sure I want those raccoons around. It was cute when it was just one. I do like squirrels, though, and if all I have is a squirrel-proof feeder then they won't come anymore either. Is there a way I can get rid of the raccoons but keep the squirrels? Cindy

Raccoons are smart creatures. Once they figure out the food supply is not there, they 'should' move on. Give it some time to see what happens. If all else fails, throw apples over the fence into your neighbour's yard ;o) (just kidding) Barb

cfancher, you could throw out just enough food for your squirrels to last until dark, then there wont be anything to attract the raccoons. of course, that is more work for you, but the raccoons stay until all the food is gone anyway. michelle

I have been fighting with our band of coons for a year. they are such smart creatures. It is kinda fun to try and out smart them. I hang my suet feeders on my porch, and they were climbing on the banister to get to the suet. I thought fine then I'll put double sided tape on the banisters...... they then just climbed the post....grrrr I now bring my feeders in at night.
