A small deer visited last evening. She walked across the pond from the wooded acres on the other side. so cautious, so dainty.

My little Bichon dog was getting hoarse from barking, but the deer ignored the din. She casually foraged under the scrubby trees that I left from the original property line.

I was taken by the wonder of how brazen she was. How adaptable deer are.

Among the subdivision yards that front on the pond, mine is the only one with a heavily treed lot line on both sides. I gave up roses and other 'gourmet deer food' long ago. Why did she visit my yard? Do animals inherit cues to old feeding grounds?

The moom was full enough to watch her for the hour she visited. Quite an enchanting evening, but I do hope she does not come back.
