Fast growing is going to be a moot point - evergreens that will be hardy enough to withstand your climate as well strong winds tend to be rather slow growing. Perhaps a combination of larger, faster growing deciduous trees combined with some slower growing evergreens would work. Even the bare winter branches of deciduous trees and shrubs can serve to reduce wind. The attached link is a good listing of recommended trees and shrubs for difficult conditions in zones 3 and 4. The site refers more to specific soil conditions than to wind tolerance, but check out the selections, natives in particular, to get some good ideas.

Hi, white and blue spruce trees will provide a good wind break. They're usually available in taller sizes. Once established, they can grow quite rapidly 12" to 18" a year.
White spruce are very hardy and trouble free.

We had this same problem and solved it by planting three layers - Austrian pines, White pines and decidous trees (crabapples).
