Advice for high-wind, full sun rooftop container garden

I am in my second year of developing a container garden on my rooftop. The wind has turned out to be quite a challenge. Please send advice on plants that would thrive in this harsh environment, something besides Juniper. I need some heartly climbing vines for a trelis/watertank, and clematis failed last summer!
Thanks! |

| I live in Sheepshead Bay near the ocean and we get some stiff breezes. Gaillardia, echinacia, (e.g. White Swan, any purpurea variant), ornamental grass, (e.g., blue fescue), low growing coreopsis, should work. Good luck with a trellis and vines. If you want to grow vegetables, Redbor kale, Rhubarb or Charlotte swiss chard will do well in containers. During the summer basil should be OK as well as thyme, oregano. My soil mix is compost/manure, you may want to add 25% peat to lighten the weight, and cups of perlite for drainage. Good luck. Enjoy. I'm in Bavaria twice a year and often out of touch. |
