Winter color in California?

| My area is VERY windy (Sacramento Delta) and that makes it a problem. Would like to plant something that will give me color but it needs to be able to tolerate the gusty abusive winds. I thought about pansy's but the jack rabbits would get em. I feed the rabbits carrots and, so far, they leave my plants alone but I don't want to temp fate.
Thoughts?

| Do you mean flower color? I enjoy snapdragons, sweetpeas if you get them in early, first October, dianthus and other annuals. Scabiosa butterfly blue and gailardia bloom nearly all year. Hellebores begin in January. My mini shrub roses bloom into January. Sasanqua camelias begin to bloom late October and go into January; you get most of the bloom before the rains start. There are others. I think with the winds you just need to make sure you have a bit of shelter for the annuals. |

| Salvias! Most are deer resistant, I don't know about bunny resistant, but many start there show in fall and continue through winter. Tough, hardy, drought-tolerant plants that come in many colors, sizes, shapes and form. They're hard to beat! wanda |

| How about Japanese Flowering Quince...I can't imagine that the deer would be able to eat them with the thorns on the branches and they are the first plant to bloom in January. They make nice hedges, which might help with wind protection. |
