Mulching for the winter

I have never had any luck winterizing my plants -- like begonias and mums -- so that they bloom again in the spring.
Can anyone suggest a web site that describes ways to cover these plants properly?

I am thinking of covering each plant with maple tree leaves and placing a small straw basket over them. Would that work? Suggestions would be appreciated. .... wdc (in Wash. DC)

RE: Mulching for the winter

Most begonias will not be winter hardy - you will need to lift and store the tubers. The mums should be fine and generally will retain some basal foliage through the winter (similar to shasta daisies). A light leaf mulch should work well, but be careful about holding too much wet material over the crown - it can produce rot. Don't look for flowers in spring. Mums flower according to day length and are late season bloomers.
