The Winter Garden

Red berry trees

I'm trying to find the name of the remarkable trees I see growing in town (Waynesboro VA). I've always thought of them as winterberry trees but I don't believe this is correct. They are probably about twelve feet high and the crown about the same width. They have a single trunk with branches coming out at about 5 or 6 feet. The branches are covered with bright red berries just about all winter. They are the brightest color around right now and are a winter delight.

Most likely some form of crabapple.

I have gotten some help from the Tree Forum and believe these trees are Crataegus viridis 'Winter King'. Thanks.

That has larger, less numerous fruits that do not persist that long out here, sometimes even falling in November. Your tree might be Washington hawthorn, that looks more like a winterberry in fruit and they last a long time.

Sounds like Mountain Ash or Rowan

No. These are definitely Crataegus 'Winter King".
