EXTRA Nesting Material for the Birds

Hello All, sorry I've been absent for a bit. Lots to do as you know, and staring a new job.
But, I wanted to include this photo for you from an idea I got in a nursery garden this past Sep.
Here, south of Boston, MA we get a lot of starlings (who doesn't) and they LOVE peanuts! Well, that's just what I mixed into my suet. The birds went nuts and devoured two bricks in no time.
Wanting to share the wealth, I waited till they had finished every last morsel, then trimmed off some grasses and some carex and stuffed them into the suet feeder, so birds could use this as nesting material.
So far so good!
When that's done, I'll put in sliced fruit.
Hope you enjoy, and have a Merry Christmas!
Best,

| Looks like a nice idea. I don't know birds; do some of them use nests in winter? |

Hello Clare, In this area, where it will get horribly windy and cold in another couple of months, I'm thinking of the stragglers who stay and have chosen not to migrate, like some of the Robins. Lots of Doves and Sparrows stay through through winter. This is for them. I will leave it up till the Spring as well, to see what happens. Best, PP |

| Hi, just saw this older post but if you are still leaving nesting material, try dog hair (if you have a dog, that is!). I've put those big fluffy chunks that come out all over in a suet feeder and it's all gone w/in a day. |

| Funny, when I used to brush my dog outside, I would pull the hair from the brush, and leave the fluffy clumps on the ground below trees. In the spring I would see nests with white dog fur woven into them. My dog had a terrible shedding problem. I brushed her every single day for over a year, and she still shed. |

That is a nice idea! I could do that with the my Little Bluestem grasses next spring provided they grow nicely this year! I have 4 dogs that shed spring and fall...the birds love all that downy soft fluff :) Vera |
