Hi Folks, ol' man winter has set up shop here in Va now. No more balmy days of Dec to pamper the crops. I still have about 5 cabbages out there and wondering if I should pick them now or just cover and wait? Night time temps in lower 20'sF for as far as the eye can see. If the cabbages were covered in snow I'd be less concerned but I don't want them to freeze solid.
Probably can say bye-bye to broccoli side shoots now. Brussels sprouts still hanging on. Carrots ok in ground. Collards probably on last leg. Pansies taking this all in stride. Come on Snow! vgkg |

| I wouldn't worry about the cabbages, they're biennial. Coles can take plenty of freezes and not be ruined. I've got a bok chow and several heads of leaf lettuce which get frozen every night but when they thaw they don't go mush, and they're all still growing nicely. Flowerwise I've got blooming golden marguerite, ragged robin, yellow primula, malva "windsor castle", white campanula latiflora, and two types of dianthus. I direct sowed my kiddie pool garden with annual seeds for full sun, I did about thirty varieties, and I am currently assessing my collection of recycles for winter sowing. NOW is the time to begin. Please DO NOT pray for snow!!!!! Trudi |

| Ah, come on Trudi, how bout' just a little snow....a little foot or two ;o). I was watchng the news tonite about Buffalo and see they have 4 feet in just the past few days, ahhh those lake effects! Also, the same news report stated that a Siberian Express cold wave is building up and may hit the US around Jan 5-6. This is much worst than what we've already got now with much colder temps in store for Jan. If fact, the report (if it can be believed) said that this change in airflows will persist into Feb for the US and keep temps will below normal. So it seems that one ingredient for snow is here to stay, now for the moisture to enter the picture. We may see a Nor'easter yet form out of all this stuff. That'll make nice a white blanket for my cabbages and pansies, and with a little luck keep me from going to work for a few days ;o) vgkg |
