| Hi all. Well the temperatures here on Long Island are dropping down into the 40's during the day, but the evergreens are as handsome as ever and some of the annuals and even the perennials are still holding out. There is a hint of snow in the air as the days get colder. The garden is starting to settle down for the winter. In the wake of all of this I was determined that the season was not yet over and missioned outside to start digging a new garden bed. Outside with double sweatshirt and wool cap, the love of gardening went on. The bed will be dug in a couple of days with anticipation for the Spring when the new additions can be planted. Just a nice way to start the winter! |

Here in soggy northern california we have had a very wet winter so far. The evening temps have been around the mid 4o's and the daytime has stayed rather cool ( mid to high 50's ) due to the grey cloud cover. Its been too wet to really do any ground amending work, which is what I usually work on at this time of the year, If it dries out in the next few weeks I will go out and winter prune my hedge of Evelyn roses and apply the first dormant oil and copper spraying. I will probably construct a few frost protection tee pees, just in case a heavy frost is predicted so that I am ready. I planted a tropical inspired garden this past year and it will be interesting to see what survives during this winter season. |

| I dig all winter long Lee, it's my favorite time for transplanting. As long as the ground isn't frozen and I can muck around in it I will. It makes up for summer here when fifteen minutes outside in 90+ degrees instantly wilts me. Trudi |

Trudi, I just read your article on sowing seeds during the winter and found it very interesting and inspiring! I wonder if there are any articles written on this and definitely keep record of your post. You are on your way to a good book or at least an informative pamphlet! Nice work! Happy gardening! Lee P.S. I am still digging, but the ground is starting to get hard! |
