good winter plants for backlighting as the sun sets?

| The winter sun sets behind my garden. It gets caught beautifully in the miscanthus, the last few red leaves on my oak leaf hydrangea, and the anemone seed heads.
What else? The rest of the plants growing there just look forlorn in this season. |

| Can you grow nandina in your area? It looks lovely in the setting sun. Also any purple type of foliage will look good in that situation - smoke bush, dodonea, viburnum opulus, the smaller Japanese maples. Plants with contorted branches or interesting bark also look good. In your zone I think you can grow dogwoods and witch hazel, which would also be appropriate for your situation. Eduarda |

that scene was made for any of the deciduous hollies.
ilex decidua or ilex verticilatta would really shine(until the birds clean the fruit from the branches)!
i don't know if you can grow yaupon holly in your area but the berries are more translucent red compared to other hollies. it is not deciduous, however. it can be pruned to open up the plant to let more light in. |

| I would like to suggest Hamamelis, Corylopsis and Chimonanthus praecox. In earliest spring, Cornus mas would look great, backlighted by the low sun. Zenobia pulverulenta is supposed to keep its colored leaves like Nandina is, but mine is slowly losing them. The color is great. |
