Not true. I live in northern Wisconsin (Zone 3) and have species tulips, daffodils, crocus, scilla, lilies, etc. They do just fine and I've had them for years. I don't plant hybrid tulips because they are expensive and seem to last only a few years, or revert to an original color. They are also a favorite food of deer, which we have a lot of. Spring bulbs emerge in April and May here.

A lot of spring bulbs do fine here in Z3, Harry, as Virginia says. I've stopped planting tulips (which I deerly love) and crocus, because of the deer epidemic. However, daffys, hyacinth, scilla, Glory-of-the-snow, puskinia, allium all do great here.

Jumping on this post with a question. Are you saying than that the deer don't bother the other bulbs? I also have a deer epidemic. Wondering what will be half way safe.

Sorry I didn't look back at this thread sooner, Cheryl. Deer don't eat daffodils, for sure. I've never had them eat Glory of the Snow, Puskinia, allium, scilla, or hyacinths. They are bonkers about tulips and crocus, as I am sure you well know. Much as I love tulips, I simply switched from fancy tulips to fancy daffy's, and never looked back :)

Have you ever noticed that although deer pull up the iris, they leave them on the ground and don't eat them? Curious, I guess. I keep sticking them back in the ground and they do fine. I'm rambling; sorry!
