spring clematis growth and frost

The clematis came up early this year. Would anyone know if they need to be covered for a frost like roses, or will they be fine like most perennials. Thank you so much for any advice. Pat

I protect mine only because I 'baby' them.

The frost will not kill them, but it will kill the tips.

I use a blanket or pot to cover them, depending on the size of the plant.

Thank you, I called Bluestone Prennials and they said about the same thing. I've saved tons of pots for this reason. Guess I baby mine also cause they they are now covered. They put up so many shoots this year couldn't stand to see them nipped at least while they were still smallish enough to cover. Saw pictures of cruddy SNOW in Wisconsin. Would be nice if this is last of it (crossed fingers). Anyway good night and thanks. Pat
