European Larch - when does it bud out?

Howdy -

Anyone in SE WI have European Larch (not the weeping one)? I'm really paranoid that mine's dead. It went brown & dropped needles really early last fall (we had a late summer drought). Also, last year was the first full season of having a paved driveway vs. gravel. That driveway covers maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the tree's root zone. What do you think? Is it still too early or is it dead? I can't remember when it typically breaks bud. Can it really kick the bucket that fast? I don't see any bud coloration at all.

I understand how you feel, cranberry! I don't have larch, but I do have things that haven't started yet. Some ornamental grasses haven't greened up yet, a summersweet looks dead, a hydrangea and a smoke bush don't have any buds. I'm hopeful that they're all still alive.

Scratch the bark on some soft wood, and see if there's any green underneath. This time of year, many of my trees/shrubs have scratch marks!
