Beginner help with watering

Hi,

My boyfriend and I have planted a vegetable garden for the first time this year. We are very excited, but also have a lot to learn. We were hoping someone might give us some advice on watering. Right now we have some seedlings started inside (tomatoes, squash, peppers) and some seeds planted outside (peas, spinach, lettuce). We are planning on waiting until the end of the month to transplant the seedlings based on average temps at night.

One thing that we can't seem to find good info on is watering. Is there any general advice for this? What should we look for to know when we are under-watering and when it is too wet? A lot of sites say 1" per week-but how can we tell that easily? I figure watering is different for different times of the season and life stage and also between plants?

I guess we just need some general watering advice from fellow WI gardeners who know our climate.

Thanks!
