Much farther south here, but zone 4a. Grew Green Giant for 5 years, never any winter dieback, but incredibly slow to start new growth each season. It would do nothing until the end of June. Still grew an average of 10 inches a year, but very sparse. I would choose a Techny Arborvitae (which I grow too) over it any time and every time.

I have some Techny's planted on the north side of my house, but otherwise open to full sun. Planted in 1994 as a 3ft potted plants, they are now 20ft high and 13ft wide at the base. They do tend to get many multiple trunks, and I thinned them to 3-5. Snowload is never a problem as it can be with Pyramidal arborvitae that grows much narrower. After the first year, I provided no supplemental water, and I do not water my lawn, but I do fertilize the lawn every 3 years. The trees themselves have never been fertilized. I live at the top of a hill; although they do well in moist (even wet) locations, this is not one of them.

What I am getting at here is that if you water and fertilize, they will grow much faster. Nitrogen (fertilizer), like what is in any lawn fertilizer, is the limiting nutrient with most trees, including arborvitae. So a plain ol' lawn fertilizer (without weedkiller) is a perfect choice for feeding.
