tiny red spiders...help

I am hoping I can find help with this here, or maybe you can direct me somewhere else. I live in Wisconsin. We were sitting on the patio on the 4th and had to move indoors because we were being bitten by thousands of teeny tiny red spiders. At least I think they were spiders, they behaved like spiders. Does anyone know why so many and how to get rid of them?

Are they spider mites?

They are chiggers-the only way I know to get rid of them is to smoosh them :)

There are a lot this year-I am not sure why.

They're probably Red Freshwater Mites. I saw one walking on a rock next to a creek. It looked and moved like a spider, but when I looked it up in the Audubon Field Guide to Insects and Spiders, I learned it was a mite. The bright red color is striking. Maybe homemade insecticidal soap will be enough to get rid of them.
