I plant straight thru the summer as often as not. Just keep the plants well watered & mulched. This goes for perennials, shrubs & trees.

I usually plant anytime too, although I limited my purchases last year because of the drought, and I don't plant if the soil is so wet that it turns to muck.

This July has been perfect for planting. Now is when I go around looking for bargains, and in normal years, they suffer some setback from the heat. This July, with all its rain, has been about like Spring in the southland. Mild and wet. I've been 'holding' a few things near the hose bib because I am waffling about where to plant them.

Since most of us in WI have had abundant rainfall this season, I agree with Bob, Janet, and Pondy. But even in a drier year, you can still plant throughout the summer, as long as you provide enough water, as was already stated above.

BUT! I think and hope you're talking about container plants, which can be planted any time the ground can be worked. What you probably DON'T want to do is dig up or divide an established plant right now during the heat of summer, and transplant to a new location. That will put too much stress on a plant, and it may not survive unless you give it lots of water. But it could also drown, or lose foliage from too much hot wind....too many ifs.

HOWEVER (there's always a however), some of the tough plants can take dividing and transplanting, no matter what time of year it is, as long as you get the divisions in the ground at least 6 weeks before your ground freezes. I do that with Daylilies and Hostas all the time.
