I've always had the best luck moving plants in the spring. They have a chance to get settled and start new growth when the weather is best. Just about everything I planted or moved in the fall never made it over the winter.

It all depends on the plants bloom time and why I'm moving them. If it's something that blooms in the spring, I move them in the fall so I don't disrupt the spring blooms. Also, if the move is to make room for something else to go in I usually do it in the fall. If I'm moving for division purposes I usually do that in the spring. Just personal preference, I guess.

i have done it both ways and either works fine for me...

if i am giving stuff away...to make room for more stuff....i usually do it in the spring so they have the benefit of extra tender loving care from their new owners...

at this time of the year...when everything is getting ready to shut down for the winter...you can be a little rougher with the plants....just keep them watered in well till fall...

mostly...it's when you are in the mood...

A friend that I share plants with quotes an old adage,"the time to divide is when the trowel is sharp." Meaning, when the gardener has time to devote to the garden.

So, for me, I tend to do more of my transplanting in fall, but I wonder if I'd have fewer losses if I transplanted more in spring.

Maybe this is why some of us haven't had good luck in fall.
