I would bury it about a foot under the rose bush. You don't want it too close or it could burn the roots, as carp would be a source of nitrogen. So dig a deep enough hole put the carp in and add about a foot of soil on top of it. Then put the rose in.

Ten yrs ago we lived on a lake and my hubby was an avid fisherman, and I an avid gardener. He buried all the fish entrails, heads, etc. in my veggie bed, but not directly under anything. All went into the ground about 10 to 15 inches deep. I also had a compost heap next to the raised bed, but no fly or bug attraction things were allowed, only grass clips and leaves. Periodically we would fork over the soil from his graveyard spots (marked with a tall stick)into the planting beds. What a garden! For whatever reason, the fish scales never or seldom broke down. I always knew when I planted into rich soil, because of the surviving scales. Good luck with your roses.

I use to do it years ago and had beautiful roses. I tried it a couple times the past few years but some animal always digs them up. The fish is gone and the plant is uprooted.

As Datura says, the trick is to feed the plants not the raccoons. Other than that, you can't do it wrong & the results can be spectacular. Roses like coffee grounds also.

Be sure you don't plant your roses under a window, LOL.
