Garlic - what went wrong?

Our first attempt at growing garlic has yielded "paperless"

garlic. There is no paper covering around the bulb, and in some varieties not even any paper around the individual cloves !! How do we correct this and now what do we do to preserve what we have? Thanks, Pat

You left them in the ground at least a month too long. Garlic harvest in Wisconsin is around mid-July. When the bottom 4 or 5 leaves begin to die, it's time for them to come out of the ground.

Now you have cloves which don't need to be peeled but they'll dry out quick. You can store them in a refrigerator or find a recipe for canning them. They can also be used for planting back anytime after 15 September.
