Any kind you like, really. I grow a hard neck that keeps fine in a mesh bag in my 60 degree basement in winter. tj

I also do most of my gardening in raised beds full of compost. I grow the kind of garlic that one buys in the grocery store. :-) Years ago I had some sprouting and planted it. I harvest every year and replant some of it. I read the Seed Savers Exchange catalog and dream of someday buying really interesting varieties, but this generic hardneck type that I keep growing works fine for me. I also grow potatoes that way, the ones that start sprouting in the basement. Works fine and saves a lot of money buying fancy seed potatoes.

I have had good luck with varieties from Jung seeds, based in Wisconsin.

I grow garlic in zone 4 MN and like German Brown, Music, Chesnock Red, Romanian Red, Montana Giant, and am trying Mexican Fire for the first time this year.
