The dirt fairies visited us

Well, I'm not sure how to make this story short, but I'm gonna try. After all the rain a couple weeks ago when we got water in the basement my husband decided we were going to make more raised beds around the house to help the drainage. So he moved bricks from other areas to plan it out. He made a call and got an estimate for topsoil from someone he works with thinking about getting it next week after we replace the gutters figured we would need about 10 yards. I come home from work around noon on Friday and saw a pile of dirt on our yard a week early called DH and he knew nothing about it and neither did his friend!

I asked every neighbor I saw outside if they had seen who delivered it with no luck. Finally about 5:00 the neighbor kitty corner from us came over apologizing that it was supposed to be delivered to her house the landscapers made a mistake would it be ok if we just kept the dirt we could have it for free. I couldn't believe it she said it was 10 yards about $200.00 worth. After being so bummed about having to rip the basement apart I am so glad something good could come out of this.

How neat! And what a nice neighbor! I guess the thought of going back and forth from your house to her house with a wheelbarrow was just too much for her! Good thing you needed precisely that amount of dirt, what would you have done with it otherwise? I accidently ordered too much sand once when my husband put in our brick patio. We offered it to neighbors but still had a lot left over. We had to buy about 6 garbage cans and filled them with it and store it in our garage. I've used some of it to amend the soil as I've made new garden areas but we still about 3 or 4 cans left!

Actually, it was the landscapers that said we could have it for free, they brought another load for the neighbors the next day. The neighbor actually kept apologizing and than said she was originally worried that they had dropped it off at the other corner where they have everything kept so nice. Should I have been offended? :)

Maybe the other neighbors are neatniks and get easily bothered by disorder. Some people like everything "just so" and might have been really upset to come home to a huge amount of dirt sitting in their driveway when they hadn't asked for it! My next door neighbor is a great lady but she is very fussy about her lawn. She gets it treated every fall and spring and mows it about twice a week. (sometimes three if she is having company over later that day). I know that where our lawn borders hers must drive her nuts. I have more weeds than grass growing there and we don't mow nearly as often as she does. And because we have three small kids I usually have a lot of half-finished projects going on sometimes. Despite our differances we get along great since we both garden and trade plants sometimes. So if someone in our neighborhood had a pile of dirt dumped in the wrong spot, I'm sure they would rather it be in our driveway than hers. We would be more likely to take it in stride, like you did. Maybe you should go out a buy a lottery ticket or visit a casino though. It does seem very lucky to get the very thing you needed, completely free.
