Time to pick apples?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to 'apples'. 2 years. We tried spraying and had lousy apples, we were also told to cut any branches that grew 'up'. We did that this spring. I also hung jugs of molassis and vinegar mixture in the trees. (I have 3 different kinds) The apples are really good this year, but now they are all falling from the trees. They are mighty 'hard' yet, but if I let them ripen on the trees, they will surely be on the ground first!

Is it too early to pick them? Any suggestions on how to store them without a basement?

Also, can I cut back the ugly hosta's yet? They are turning yellow, and the bugs got at them.

Dont have trees so I cant help you there but you can, if you havent already cut back your hostas. What type of trees do you have? I was sure I wanted to plant honeycrisp next yr but I tried one and didnt really care for it.

If the apples are falling off the tree then they're ripe. My parents keep theirs on a screen porch and it works great if you have something like that. My apples go into the fruit drawer in the fridge which works fairly well. The advice I read is to put a couple in a plastic bag with holes in it to keep some humidity in, but I haven't tried that. Do you know what kind of apple they are? Some apples taste better only after a few weeks of storage.

I have 3 kinds of apples, and have no idea what kind they are. They all cook well into sauce, and are awesome in pie. So I guess it doesn't matter to me what kind they are.....
