Best Place for bulbs

It's time to get my cordless drill out and plant my spring blooming bulbs (gardening and power tools...what could be better?!). Where's the best place to buy bulbs?

Last year I tried American Meadows and Color Blends. What the squirrels left me were gorgeous, but they're a bit expensive. The ones I got from Wally World were cheaper, but they don't naturalize as much as I'd like.

Where do you get your bulbs?

I bought almost all of my bulbs at Jungs in Madison. They have a good selection but they're a bit more expensive. It's my first year planting bulbs so I can't say how good they are but they look nice and big. I ordered some online too but I haven't gotten them in yet so I can't say much about those.

I received my daffy bulbs from Breck's yesterday. 100 bulbs for $41.00, including shipping. It's a 'Spring Mix'.
Wish it wasn't so cold out for planting...brrrr! Less than 20 F. this a.m., with howling winds and light snow--

elvis, I know what you mean! I was out in the cold and wind putting in bulbs, today. I don't remember freezing my *ss off last year doing this. I seem to remember alot more still blooming, too.

Some of my best displays have come from the cheapest of the cheap...ya, you guessed it...WallMart. Something always eats the tulips within 3 years. Moles, voles, chippies, squirrels, I dont know. I have learned to treat them as annuals. so buy the cheapest I can. All the Daffies and "minor' bulbs do just fine. I had marvelous luck with bulbs from Jungs catalog sales in Randolf, WI. Others tell me Brent and Becks are great. A three pack of bleeding hearts from WallMart produced the most astonishing huge bushes I've ever seen. So far, they lasted 7 years. WallMart is always dickering for the cheapest prices, so one cant rely on the same supplier. If you are looking for perfect displays, go with know growers.

I'm amazed! Wally World here is out of bulbs! I did pick up a bag of hybrid Darwin tulips, but they're all out of daffs and minor bulbs.

Speaking of...what's your favorite bulb? Lately, I'm smitten with anemones. Last year they bloomed a good 2 months for me. We'll see how well they naturalize next spring.

I can't say if they are any good or not, but I took advantage of Menards rebate thing and got 4 packages of tulip bulbs for free a few weeks back, I may take a walk down to jungs and check prices for others.

Yikes! I've still got about 30 bulbs to get in. I guess we're all having the rain. Oh, well--it sure beats the snow :0

Thanks to DH, got the veggie garden cleaned out Sunday (nice day!) except for the black plastic I cover the ground with.

When's it supposed to warm up again?

If your planning horizon is short this won't apply but I've been getting bulbs for some # of years from Van Engelen. They have a website. Prices are agressive for the quality and you get a specialists selection. They are the same organization as Sheepers (sp?)& have the same selections but minimum quantities are larger & so the per bulb price is less.
Good luck...theres all kinds of time left to plant bulbs.

I got a couple boxes from Sams (daffodils and tulips), hyacinths, iris, and plashinkas (spelling?) from Menards (on clearance) and Amarylis and Paperwhites from May's, along with a bottle of liquid fence to spray the tulip bulbs with while planting. Hoping that will keep the squirrels away. (Otherwise I have a BB gun and 2 dogs at the ready.)

Now I just have to find the time to get all 600 bulbs into the ground before it's too late!

Last year I picked up a huge bag of pink daffodils at Walmart. I gave half to my Mom who in turn gave half to someone else. When they came up this year, they were standard yellow daffodils. What a disappointment!

I also got mine @ Jung's Garden Center. The bulbs were huge and the selection unbelieveable.

This year I got some striped species sort of red tulips and blue alliums FREE from Brecks ($25 free deal) and mixed daffodils and crocuses FREE from Menards (free with rebate.) I also get gladiolas free or ultra cheap at Menards each year lately, with rebate also. Why buy anywhere? :-) If you want a LOT, I once ordered gazillions (1000+) bulbs/corms the first year in my last house from K. VanBourgondien (sp?) wholesale catalog. I had ordered from VanBourgondien Bros. before that and someone online tipped me off that they had a wholesale catalog. So you get many more bulbs but for the same price, it was like $22/100 daffodils, $9 for 100 crocuses, etc. Mind you this was in 1991, but they still have great deals. Minimum order was $50 but if that is a problem for you, just order some with a friend or neighbor.

Why are you all shopping at Walmart, don't you know how evil they are? They rip everybody else off (suppliers, employees, taxpayers) to give you a good deal. Here in WI they are the number one company in terms of employees being on the public Badger Care health insurance. We are paying their health insurance because they are too greedy to provide affordable health care to their employees. Shop somewhere else that pays a living wage and doesn't have more of their product produced at slave wages in China.

Picked up a couple bags of tulips at Menards this year for two bucks on clearance. Last year Wal-mart had great clearance on their bulbs and bought just a few bags. LOL
As for the shoppping at Wal-mart. Firt it is the employees choice to work there. They know what they get payed, etc.Not to mention not all places give insurance, good, fair or any at all. Not to mention with out Wal-mart its not only them would be affected. All other places that supply to them would also be affectd, cutting possable other peoples job. So why not shop there? For me it is a place can afford to shop at, especially with having a family.

Those whom have order from Brecks. How were you satisified with your order? cost and arrival? I've heard some that weren't, mostly in when they recieved their orders.

Hope everyone's bulbs come up in Spring.

The fall crocus I ordered from Jungs all came up and looked good for weeks. They are finally dying off now. Oh, and all their bulbs are 50% off this week but my husband wouldn't even let me look at them when we were there buying mulch.

I've been boycotting Walmart for years, and I feel better about myself for doing it and I haven't missed shopping there at all. Target actually has very good health insurance for their employees and doesn't cost much more than Walmart.

I'm not one to shop at Walmart. I would rather go to Target or Shopko (local Wisconsin owned) any day. My husband loves Walmart though, so if he's driving I have no choice, and you have to admit it is very convenient. If we ever get Super Target I'm sure I could get him to change his mind.

I have ordered from VanBourgondien Bros wholesale. It was a nightmare! Half of my bulbs weren't even viable, most plants were half dead when they arrived. Try to contact them if you have a problem! It took a month for them to get back to me the first time, then another month for them to give me a credit, and then they never even gave me the right amount and never contacted me again. So now I have a $25 credit that I will never use and no plants to show for it.
