I'm ready for a good freeze. I want to be done with the garden for the season, but mostly, I want the earwigs gone. They keep lining up along inside the garage side-door and it's grossing me out. Cut one in half and it will still crawl away. *shudder*

I've been told that the Farmers Almanac is calling for a cold and snowy winter. I haven't seen it myself, and I'm not sure it's always right, but I do hope we get enough snow to keep the garden protected until spring.

Farmer's Almanac? I get better predictions from the Comics section.

I'm not quite ready for snow yet. I haven't even taken in my tropicals yet. So far, so good. But I bet I'll be hauling them in tonight.

I think this is expected to an El Ninio (sp?) year. Last time we had one, I planted peas in a coldframe New Years Day. I've got seedling lettuce, spinach & turnips I'm going to grow in a straw bale greenhouse. Odds of success are small but its something to play with over the winter.

What exactly does an El Nino year do for the *Midwest*? I've always been confused about that. Colder? Warmer? Windy? Drier?

From what I've read El Nino means rain in some parts and drought in other parts. Also I've read that El Nino is almost always followed by La Nina but not always.

The last El Nino year was unusually warm in WI. There were places where the ground didn't freeze & it just never got ugly cold. We can pretty much count on at least a week of below zero temps each winter; but not that year. I remember the following summer as having alot of unusual insects tho.
