Flower identification??

There is a flower in my garden which I can not identify! I saw the flower briefly in bloom and what I remember is that it had yellow flowers at the top of very, very tall green stalks (5-8'). The flower was somewhat cone shaped (I think). The stalk is squared somewhat in diameter and the leaves were larger (can't remember the shape at this moment)- small groups spaced 6"-8" apart along the length of the stalk. Does anyone know what this might be?

I recently cut them back 3 to 4 inches from the ground, since many of them were brown and falling over. I hope I did the right thing by cutting them all down (esp. at the same time)...all the flowers were dormant, but some of the stalks were still green. Any ideas? Hoping they will grow back - they add some great height to the garden!! Not very attractive, though, once they are dormant.
