I don't believe that it is the compass plant or the evening primrose. The flowers on the compass plant don't look to be the right shape and size, and there are too many leaves on the evening primrose - the stalk is different. The plant in my garden has 6-12" of space between groups of leaves. Thanks for the suggestions, though!! I'll keep an eye out in spring - maybe it is one of these two flowers afterall.

I also suggest you post your description on the "Name That Plant" forum. Maybe someone there can also help you.

The "squarish" stem is what puzzles me.

Bee balm which is part of the mint family has square stems. If I remember right. Barb

There's a sage with a yellow flower called Stickly Jerusalem Sage. But it's like zone 6 I think. It has square stems and long spaces between leaves. It also has wrinkled and rough leaves. It only gets 3-4 feet. I'll Keep trying to think of something. Patty

Sounds like a Tansy to me, esp if it can get that tall.
