a walk in the woods

Here are some pictures of thepaths we have cut around our woods. We live in the lowlands of western Washington. Our forests consist of Douglas fir, Hemlock, Western Red Cedar, Shore and Jack Pine. The deciduous trees have grown up in clearings are mostly Alder and Willow (species?). The understory shrubs are for the most part Salal, Huckleberry (both evergreen and deciduous). Where there is more light the species become more diverse.

Beautiful woods! For a different perspective, here are some shots from our land in SC. It is mostly red and white oak, hickory, a few pines, and holly and cedar in the understory. No paths yet!

| flgargoyle; Thanks for the pictures. I don't have any experience with decidous forests. You can see so far with out a wall of green blocking the vista. I am longing to see the fresh, almost lime green of new spring foliage. Right after the new year I get a bad case of spring fever, or should i say a fever for spring. Your woods look very wintery. Here is a few views of our place looking wintery. First the front drive and pond. The drainfield, soon to be woodland meadow, and woods beyond.

| What a grand milieu. Is that a field, lawn, or maybe a marsh in the midground? I am planting under story diciduous trees, as well as many shrubs, along my paths and driveway, with the dream of future fall color. Thanks for sharing. |

| fragaria,I was very impress with the beautiful photos of your woodlands, especially the photos of the paths leading out into the forest. The sense they gave of having wilderness access right in the backyard, was very evocative. What beautiful place to live. And those shots fragaria posted of the north carolina woods with the mountains in the distance made me catch my breath.I enjoyed comparing the two ecosystems and though it would be a great idea for everyone to post images of thier locale so that we might all compare and contrast the difference enviroments.TO answer your question, that was a picture of my front yard, the small pile of split posts in the center is a future tomatoe patch(I'm running out of sunny spots in the back). |

| Nywoodsman; is the winter photo also on your property? It has a similar feel with the wooded hillside, but this time there is surely a pond at the bottom. It is so beautiful. Trees in silhouette Snow falls in Negative space A pond hides below Please More pictures, fellow forest friends. |

Fragaria,Both shots were taken from the same perspective, the pond becomes hidden by the perennial growth during the summer. I like your way with words. summer shot 2006... |

Ok now I understand. Fall, Winter and Summer. What a view! Do you see this from your house? I wouldn't get anything done if I had a scene like that to enjoy every day. There is something about veiwing depth. It must be our shared roots to the primordial savana. I love to see distance. The pic of mine of the small winter pond is right outside our front door. This spring we will be planting much more just beyond. I presume that the deer will not be allowed to share in the tomato worship. The wood you are building your chapel with looks like our Western Red Cedar. I've seen old growth timbers that look alot like that. It is our most coveted of native wood for outdoor use. |

The post were made from a couple of black locust trees from my backyard which I cut down and split myself. The trees were large (100ft)and netted close to 75 ten foot posts which I used to enclose 4 acres of the property(encluding the pond)from the deer. These were the leftovers. |

| Nywoodsmans posts in the design forum were censored and he has been banned from this site for espousing ideas considered taboo by the gardenweb monitors(his liberal use of the "E" word). So he felt it necessary to withdraw all his images and is sorry for any inconvience it might have caused. If you plan on contributing be aware that there are many exmembers who find this site's disregard for open and free speech deeply offensive and completely unamerican. |
