sexing Spicebush and Winterberry Shrubs

Does anyone know how to sex these two species?

Both require male and female plants for fruiting and I'd like to know how to tell the difference between male and female on each species.

I've looked up Winterberry and the flowers appear exactly the same on both male and female. What do you look at to determine the different sexes? Same question for the Spicebush.

Thanks in advance,

Barb in Ontario

I have heard that the flowers ARE different for the male and female spicebush.

The link below has one detailed picture a piece of spicebush flowers.

Here's a link to a writeup that within it describes the differences. Think the 2nd occurrence of searching for "male" will get you to the right section

Barb in Ontario,
The links provided above have great pics of spicebush flowers.
With a little practice you can tell male from female while still in bud, even today. Both flower buds are rounded but the males are double in size and more yellow/green in color. Male buds are more prominent. This is assuming that your plants are large enough to have flower buds.
Winterberry is even easier. Female plants still have berries. Even if the berries were removed the stem which held the berry remains. You can look under the bush for berries which may have fallen.
(keep in mind I am writing from Maryland where we haven't seen a single flake of snow this year)

This blog was helpful. Now, are there any contraindications to planting a male and female together, to grow as one plant together?
