What type of plant is this?

I have a ground cover? that is growing in my back yard. And I don't know what is is. It has Small green leaves and has red berries on it like a cranberry or red berry from a holly bush. It is growing in shady and can live under thick fallen leaves all winter. Does anyone know if this is a good plant or bad and know the name to it? Thanks

Sounds like Partridge berry ( I think it is Mitchella repens) and is a native plant. It's one of the good guys. It will have small white flowers in spring and the wildlife enjoy the berries. It is slow growing and non-invasive and will, over time, produce a wonderful ground cover. lmw

Partridge berry! How wonderful! My Grandmother, who introduced me to gardening, made a Christmas tradition of taking us kids out in the SC woods and collecting a little bowl of moss and a few partridge berry plants the we would use for decoration. Shes long gone now, but the mention of partridge berries always make me think of her. You're lucky to have them!
