Woodpecker Damage Question?

FIREFOX

The tree seemed fine aside from the leaves becoming covered with little holes every year.Last year a woodpecker took to putting a 8" long hole deep into one of our branches. The wood he had removed was healthy, the inside of the hole appeared healthy. One day I noticed a chunk of branch broken off up in the tree, upon taking it down I discovered that it was the chunk that the woodpecker had gouged into.It was rotten, soft, spongy. Since then we have noticed rot in several places. If you can find out whats causing it, if it's salvageable? We have another branch with a hole rotting into it. I hope that you can find something out, I haven't had any success.Let me know if you can help. Thanks
